Summary

In Sweden, the internationalization of higher education has traditionally implied sending Swedish students, teachers and scholars out into the world to acquire knowledge. Today, however, the tide has turned, and there is an increasing emphasis on attracting students from abroad. In the academic year 2005/06, the number of incoming students exceeded the number who went abroad for the first time, mainly due to a very sharp increase in influx. In view of the great interest in the internationalization of higher education, it is surprising that this phenomenon has generated so little systematic research. This project sets out to study the influx and its effect on Swedish higher education.

Three major studies are planned: The first one will focus on governmental, non-governmental, and private organizations, domestic and foreign, that have sought to promote the internationalization of Swedish higher education. The second study will examine the investments in internationalization made by Swedish institutions of higher education, with special attention given to Master's programs and language policies. The third one will study the incoming students, both in terms of overall flows and in terms of their presence in particular educational programs and institutions.

The project will be undertaken by scholars in History, Sociology and the Sociology of Education. It will draw on a wide range of materials, including national statistics, archive material, and interviews.
